The world’s population will reach 9.8 billion by 2050, according to data from the United Nations (UN).
A growing population means higher demand for the Earth’s limited natural resources, coupled with higher waste generation.
By the same year, the UN predicts demand for water will increase by 33%, and with more than nine billion people to feed, agricultural production will rise by 50%, causing a further 15% increase in water withdrawals.
Meanwhile, the World Bank estimates the world will generate 3.40 billion tonnes of waste by 2050 – a 70% increase from 2.01 billion tonnes produced worldwide in 2016.
With our dwindling natural resources, growing mountains of waste, and worsening environmental conditions, the time has never been riper to shift into a circular economy – on a global scale.
How can a circular economy solve the world’s problems with waste, environmental pollution and depleting resources?
The European Parliament defines circular economy as “a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, and refurbishing existing materials and products as long as possible.”
A circular economy essentially extends the life cycle of products to reduce waste to the lowest level possible and leave the least environmental impact. It deviates from the traditional linear economic model of take, make, consume and throw away.
Rather, the materials of a product that reached the end of its life are recovered and kept within the economy by using it to produce other new goods. This cycle can be repeated again and again, which creates further value and eliminates waste.
Adopting a circular economy lessens the need to harvest new raw materials, which conserves our scarce natural resources and preserves the environment and its biodiversity.
A circular economy makes it possible to achieve both economic growth and environmental preservation, ensuring the future generations will enjoy the benefits of a modern world and a well-preserved Earth.
What is Visionscape’s role in achieving circular economy in mature and emerging markets?
Visionscape enables governments and corporations in mature and emerging markets to roll out a circular economy model in their respective jurisdictions. We are able to provide leading insight into the design, implementation and management of a circular economy model because we possess first-hand knowledge and experience gained through devising and integrating our own circular economy system into our daily organisational operations.
We continuously identify areas within our operations where we can implement recycling initiatives to maximise the value of our output (waste) and convert this into new products at our manufacturing divisions. We then re-introduce these recycled products into our systems to fuel our business operations across our global subsidiaries.
The same sustainability economic framework is what we offer our clients from diverse industries. As we continue to upgrade our circular economy model, we can provide our clients with the most advanced and feasible solutions to drive sustainable growth within their operational processes and help them realise their own Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
